GLOBAL AMBASSADOR ANNE HIDALGO TAKES GCoM INTO THE NEXT DECADE
Brussels, Belgium (5 May 2026) – Today, former Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo arrived in Brussels to continue her role as Global Ambassador with the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) — the largest global alliance for city climate leadership.
As GCoM celebrates 10 years since it was launched, the frequency and intensity of climate threats facing cities has grown and so too have mayors’ solutions to adapt and build resilience. Global Ambassador Hidalgo’s role will be more critical than ever to champion city climate leadership and demonstrate the impact that 14,000 cities can collectively have in addressing the climate crisis. In her role, Global Ambassador Hidalgo will continue to advocate for the policies, financial solutions, and partnerships that can help cities deliver affordable and clean energy, transport, safe and resilient housing, and a just transition for people around the world — bringing the same drive she applied in Paris to the global stage. She will collaborate with GCoM, its Board, Regional and National Covenants and Regional Ambassadors, C40 Cities, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the European Commission to champion local climate initiatives.
“More than a decade since the Paris Agreement, and as GCoM turns 10 this year, I will continue to champion what cities need to deliver ambitious climate action,” said GCoM Global Ambassador Hidalgo. “I look forward to supporting GCoM’s alliance of global and regional partners, and more than 14,000 cities and local governments worldwide, continuing to build on my experience as Mayor focused on climate action in cities.”
In her GCoM Global Ambassador role, she will continue to mobilize climate adaptation finance for cities in the Global South, support green reconstruction in Ukrainian cities, help advance affordable and sustainable housing, and ensure inclusion of local governments in international climate policy processes.
As a former two-term Mayor of Paris and inaugural GCoM Board Member, Anne Hidalgo brings a wealth of climate leadership to the GCoM alliance, especially in mobilizing city climate ambition and finance at the global scale. Anne Hidalgo was the first woman to be elected Mayor of Paris in 2014. In 2015, during COP21 where the historic Paris Agreement was adopted, Mayor Hidalgo co-hosted the Climate Summit for Local Leaders with UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions, and GCoM Co-Chair, Michael R. Bloomberg. In 2025, she hosted the 10-year anniversary of the Paris Agreement and an exhibition entitled From Paris to Belém: 10 Years of Global Climate Action, showcasing how cities, local and subnational governments are advancing more ambitious emissions reductions. She also served on the 2023-2024 Secretary-General’s Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments.
