MEDIA ADVISORY: Press Call to Preview New Research: National Governments Can Capture Major Economic Benefits by Investing in Zero-Carbon Cities

Featuring: Christiana Figueres; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; Minister Svenja Schulze and Lord Nicholas Stern

On September 17, 2019 at 10:00 EDT (16:00 CEST), the Coalition for Urban Transitions will host an embargoed press call to preview its new report, which finds significant economic, social and environmental benefits for national governments that take a lead in investing in and supporting zero-carbon cities.

The Climate Emergency, Urban Opportunity report shows that the leading countries of tomorrow will be those that invest in cities to help make them attractive for businesses and workers to live and breathe in and be productive. It quantifies benefits to cities and countries from reaching net-zero carbon emissions, including energy savings and security, job creation, cleaner air and more. The report shows that national governments have a critical role in driving the zero-carbon transition in urban areas, and that by supporting local governments and others to realize the potential of cities, they can enhance national economic prosperity and address the climate emergency at the same time.

The press call will feature leading voices on the economic and political momentum toward zero-carbon cities, including: Christiana Figueres; Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti; Minister Svenja Schulze; and Lord Nicholas Stern.

Timed to inform the global dialogue around the future of cities and the planet at the UN Climate Action Summit, the new report will identify powerful new opportunities for governments to accelerate zero-carbon urban development in a time of macroeconomic uncertainty and climate crisis.

The Coalition for Urban Transitions is a special initiative of the New Climate Economy, co-managed by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and the World Resources Institute Ross Center.

The Climate Emergency, Urban Opportunity report is under embargo until September 19 at 00:01 EDT/06:01 CEST. All reporters joining the call must agree to this embargo and RSVP to urbantransitions@gpg.com.
