How will the commitments of signatories of former Compact of Mayors and Covenant of Mayors be affected?

Local governments that have made a commitment to either the Covenant of Mayors or the Compact of Mayors prior to the merger of the two initiatives within the Global Covenant of Mayors are automatically considered signatories to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy and the relevant Regional/National Covenant where one exists.

These signatories do not need to sign a new commitment letter.

However, these GCoM signatories are encouraged to make or upgrade their commitments so as to be at least as ambitious as, and preferably more ambitious, than their respective government’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement (see FAQ 17 for details on commitment).
