What is the history of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy?

In 2017, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy brought together the EU-funded Covenant of Mayors and the former Compact of Mayors – the world’s two primary initiatives for cities and local governments to advance city-level climate action.

The Covenant of Mayors was created in 2008 with the support of the European Commission and inspired the set-up of many of the existing Regional/National Covenants worldwide (see FAQ 11 for information on the Regional/National Covenants). Launched in 2014, the former Compact of Mayors was a global cooperative effort among mayors and city officials to pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, track progress and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
