Regional/National Covenants of Mayors for Climate & Energy are being developed with the aim of comprehensively supporting every municipality and local government in the world. Each Covenant is a member of the Global Covenant of Mayors alliance, engaging with local governments and other local entities to encourage local level climate action while simultaneously building a community of committed signatories to the initiative. Coordinating with all relevant local, regional and national partners and city networks, they:
Mobilize new signatories around a regional or national commitment
Facilitate access to capacity building and technical assistance
Engage with participating cities and make available technical support structures that are as locally specific and regionally responsive as possible, while allowing for consistency, coordination and exchange of experience across all regions.
Where such Regional/National Covenants do not exist yet, they may be established, inspired by the models of the EU’s Covenant of Mayors as well as the Compact of Mayors, but adjusted to local circumstances, priorities and expertise.
